GEO in 2026: how to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews
Generative Engine Optimization is the new SEO. Here's the framework we use to get clients quoted inside AI answers, not just ranked on page one.
AI search engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews) are now the first stop for high-intent buyers. Ranking #1 on Google is no longer enough, you need to be the source LLMs quote. This guide breaks down the GEO playbook: entity-first content, structured data that machines actually parse, citation hygiene, and the 6 on-page patterns that get you pulled into generative answers.
- AI search already drives 15–30% of high-intent B2B traffic, and it doesn't show up in GA4 as 'organic'.
- LLMs cite content that is structured, entity-rich and directly answers a question in the first 60 words.
- Schema.org (Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product) is the single biggest GEO lever in 2026.
- Backlinks still matter, but brand mentions in trusted sources matter more for LLM citations.
- Track AI visibility with Profound, Otterly or a weekly manual audit. If you don't measure it, you don't own it.
What GEO actually is (and what it isn't)
Generative Engine Optimization is the discipline of getting your brand cited and recommended inside answers generated by large language models. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. It is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO's natural next layer: same fundamentals, new surface.
The difference is the unit of distribution. Classic SEO competes for a blue link. GEO competes for a sentence inside someone else's answer. When a buyer asks ChatGPT 'best CRM for a 12-person agency in Spain', you either get named, or you don't exist.
Why this matters right now
AI search is no longer a curiosity. As of Q1 2026, ChatGPT alone serves over 5 billion queries per week. Perplexity is the default research tool for a generation of operators. Google AI Overviews appear on 47% of commercial-intent queries in English.
The traffic this sends is small but lethal: visitors who arrive through an AI citation convert at 4–7x the rate of generic organic, because the LLM has already done the qualification.
The 6-part GEO framework
We use this exact checklist on every article we publish for clients. Skip a step, lose the citation.
- Entity-first writing: name people, products, places and companies explicitly. LLMs reason in entities, not keywords.
- Answer in the first 60 words: TL;DR or summary above the fold. This is what gets pulled.
- Structured data: Article + FAQPage + BreadcrumbList at minimum. HowTo and Product when relevant.
- Citation hygiene: link to primary sources, include dates, name your data. LLMs prefer pages that cite well.
- Question-shaped headings: H2s and H3s phrased as the user would ask them.
- Brand mention loop: get mentioned in places LLMs trust (Reddit, Wikipedia, niche publications, podcast transcripts).
How to measure AI visibility
GA4 will not save you here. AI referral traffic is reported as 'direct' or stripped of referrer. You need a dedicated stack.
Our default: Profound or Otterly for share-of-voice tracking, plus a weekly manual audit of 20 priority prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Log who's cited, what's said, and where you appear (or don't).
Common mistakes (and how to fix them)
Three patterns we see kill GEO performance:
- Burying the answer 800 words deep. LLMs scan, then leave.
- Stuffing keywords instead of entities, pre-2020 SEO does not work here.
- No schema, or worse, broken schema, validate with Google Rich Results Test every release.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?+
No. GEO is a layer on top of SEO. The technical fundamentals (crawlability, speed, internal links, schema) are still required, they're the entry ticket. GEO adds entity clarity, summary-first writing and citation-worthy formatting on top.
How long does it take to see results?+
AI engines re-index much faster than Google. We typically see citations appear in Perplexity within 2–3 weeks of publishing, and in ChatGPT within 4–8 weeks once the URL has accumulated a handful of mentions.
Do backlinks still matter for GEO?+
Yes, but brand mentions matter more. LLMs are trained on the open web, unlinked mentions in trusted sources (Reddit threads, niche newsletters, podcast transcripts) count almost as much as links.
What's the single highest-impact change I can make today?+
Add a 50–60 word summary at the top of every article that directly answers the question implied by the title. That alone has lifted citation rates by 3–5x on every site we've tested it on.
